Face Offset

Location: MANIPULATION section → Face Offset

Description

The Face Offset tool allows you to duplicate a face and move it along its normal direction while keeping it constrained to that axis. It also provides the ability to scale the face in its plane (perpendicular to the normal).

Usage

Basic Operation

  1. Activate the tool from the MANIPULATION section
  2. Select a face by clicking on it (you'll see red highlighting)
  3. Move the mouse to control the offset distance
  4. Press Space/Enter to confirm the operation

Controls

Mouse Movement

  • Mouse movement: Controls the offset distance along the face normal

Keyboard Input

  • Number keys (0-9): Direct numeric input for precise distance
  • Decimal point (.): For decimal values
  • Minus (-): For negative distances
  • Tab: Activate numeric input mode
  • Enter/Space: Confirm numeric input and lock distance
  • ESC:
  • If distance is locked: unlock distance
  • Otherwise: cancel operation

Scaling

  • S key (hold): Temporary scaling mode while held
  • Scale factor controlled by mouse movement
  • Scaling is constrained to the face plane (perpendicular to normal)
  • Release S to exit scaling mode

Features

  • Distance Locking: Once you input a numeric value, the distance is locked and won't change with mouse movement
  • Constrained Movement: The duplicated face only moves along its normal direction
  • Plane Scaling: Scaling only affects the face in its own plane, not along the normal
  • Visual Feedback: Clear highlighting shows the selected face and offset preview

Tips

  • Use numeric input for precise positioning
  • The scaling feature is perfect for creating tapered or expanded duplicates
  • Distance locking helps maintain exact measurements while adjusting other parameters

Technical Notes

  • Creates a new object with the duplicated face
  • Maintains original face orientation
  • Supports both positive and negative offset distances
  • Scaling preserves the face center position
