Planar Cut

What is it?

The Planar Cut tool allows you to cut mesh objects using a face as the cutting plane. It works exclusively in object mode and is ideal for making precise and clean cuts through multiple objects at once.

Access and Shortcuts

  • Pie Menu: Manipulation > Planar Cut
  • Operator: damtools.planar_cut
  • Modal keys:
  • Click → Select cutting face / Confirm cut
  • Spacebar → Confirm cut (in review mode)
  • ESC → Cancel operation

Tips

  • The cutting face can be from any object, not just the ones being cut
  • Use review mode to verify the cutting plane before making complex cuts
  • The cutting plane extends infinitely in all directions
  • All selected objects will be cut by the same plane
  • Cut surfaces are automatically filled
  • Objects are automatically separated into individual parts

Known Limitations

  • Only works in object mode
  • Cannot be used with non-mesh objects
  • Does not support undo during the modal operation (only after completion)
  • Complex geometry might produce unexpected results
